Artist’s Talk with Dr. Noam Sienna | Learning Center

The Legacy of Jewish Scribal Art from Past to Present: Explore Hebrew calligraphy from Sephardi lands of the medieval ages until modern times including Noam’s own extraordinary calligraphy.

Dr. Noam Sienna is a scholar of Jewish culture and history, a Jewish educator, and a Hebrew calligrapher and book artist. Originally from Toronto, Noam received his PhD in Jewish History and Museum Studies at the University of Minnesota in 2020. He also holds a MA in Religious Studies from the University of Toronto, and two degrees from Brandeis University: an MAT in Judaic Studies and a BA in Anthropology and Classics with a minor in Religion.

The Making of a Torah: From birth to marriage, from cow to Torah, come and explore this ancient and fascinating art while using the latest digital technology. The old and new come together to create a Godly instrument.

Rabbi Yochanan Salazar is a master sofer (scribe), educator and lecturer.  Born in Ecuador, South America, he moved to the US as a teen.  Before becoming a scribe, he studied in Hudson College and later attended NJIT where he majored in electronics engineering and public speaking.  While in college he met his wife Hanna, together they moved to Florida where they now live with their six children.

With his expert and gifted talent for precise and accurate Torah repair work, he now heads the Torah Restoration Department of Sofer ON Site.  He often travels around the country restoring Torahs on site, while educating communities on the proper techniques of Torah care.

As we celebrate our gift to Beth El we are thinking of those who rely on STEP. We will be assembling “Celebration Bags” to donate so others can enjoy a celebration of their own. Please help us with our Tzedakah project bring joy to those in need.

We are also collecting warm socks as a part of our Socks for Tzedakah drive!

Join us for this once in a lifetime opportunity to witness the Sofer writing the final letter in our new Sefer Torah – help us celebrate this Shehecheyanu moment!

~ 5:00 pm | Community Chanukah Celebration ~

The celebration continues as we usher in the final night of Chanukkah B’Yachad- Together- with candle lighting, song and nosh.
