
Cantor Hinda Labovitz has been the cantor of Ohr Kodesh Congregation since 2014, and served simultaneously as the religious school principal of the Alvin Browdy Religious School and director of education through 2022. Cantor Labovitz is a contralto, and has performed in many locations locally and internationally, singing diverse genres including chazzanut, Broadway, folk songs, popular, and Israeli music. She is proud to collaborate frequently with other cantors in the DMV and in other U.S. communities.
Cantor Labovitz has earned the esteem of her colleagues, having served as a member of the Executive Council of the Cantors Assembly (2017-2020). She co-chaired the 2024 CA Convention in Minneapolis, MN, and is currently serving as co-chair of the 2027 convention in Northern Virginia.
She achieved cantorial ordination and an M.A. in Judaic studies in the School of Jewish Music of Hebrew College in Newton, MA. Cantor Labovitz was twice awarded the Al Goldberg Scholarship in Jewish Music, and upon graduation, she also received the Israel Pollack Award for Excellence in Judaic Studies from Hebrew College. She was also the 2013-2014 recipient of the Gideon Klein Scholarship from Northeastern University, for which she dedicated a year of independent study of the cabaret at the Westerbork concentration camp in the Netherlands.
Cantor Labovitz served as Ritual Director of Temple Emanu-El in Providence 2009-2012, and as student cantor at Congregation Kehillath Israel in Brookline, MA 2012-2014. She was the assistant to the conductor for the Zamir Chorale of Boston (2008-2014), where she also served as Mary Wolfman Epstein Conducting Fellow (2009-2010), studying conducting under maestro Dr. Joshua Jacobson, and sang alto for eight years.

10:45 am | Cantor Labovitz will lead the Prayer for Israel and the Musaf service in the sanctuary
12:30 pm | Song Circle following Shabbat lunch – Cantor Labovitz will teach us some new songs and lead us in communal singing/zmirot in the Learning Center
5:45 pm | Minchah, Seuda Shlishit and Ma’ariv – Cantor Labovitz will attend the evening services and lead Havdalah
